Politicians, the mainstream media, and the public are ineducable, their ignorance often self-serving. Leaving aside their fundamental misunderstandings, such as accepting the legitimacy and need for government or condemning capitalism (the system that arises with freedom and allows us to flourish), here are three examples.
They conflate higher costs and inflation, which are separate phenomena. Freeing markets can deal with higher costs, and ending central banks can radically limit inflation.
They believe a trade deficit, an accounting artifact that also means a current account surplus, is a problem and should be solved through protectionism. However, a trade deficit is meaningless, and protectionism only serves special interests to the detriment of the rest of us.
They believe immigrants are a problem. No, they are a resource, and decency calls for welcoming and respecting them. As to “illegal immigrants,” the answer has long been clear: make them “legal.”
I advocate liberty – the end of rulers. Democracy is a poor alternative to actual freedom.
