Leadership Week in Review: May 12-18, 2024

by David E. Shellenberger on May 20, 2024

Each week, I collect the resources related to leadership, personal growth, and professional development I shared on social media the prior week, with the accompanying quotations.
……..

Travis Bradberry:

7 Core Beliefs of Great Bosses” (5-13-24).

“[E]xceptional bosses love their jobs and believe that everyone else can too. They give people assignments that align with their strengths, passions, and talents. They celebrate accomplishments and douse people with positive feedback when they do good work.”
……..

Autonomy is one of the three basic needs identified by Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Leaders need to understand SDT to best serve staff and customers or clients.

The late Jonathan Byrnes:

How To Make Better Decisions” (5-8-24).

“The feeling of control is one of the wellsprings of mental health. One of the classic industrial engineering experiments found that assembly line workers who were allowed to work to the bottom of a bucket of bolts before it was refilled were much happier and more productive than those who had the bucket endlessly refilled.

We really value the freedom to choose.”
……..

Frank Sonnenberg presents an excerpt from his book Soul Food: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life (2018):

Hard Work Is Good for Your Soul” (5-15-24).

“Work isn’t just about getting a paycheck; hard work builds character, promotes dignity, and gives you control over your life.”

One of the lessons:

Don’t accept the status quo. Be a problem-solver. Make things better.
……..

Jim Clemmer:

Training and Development: Top Ten Lessons Learned” (5-15-24).

“Leverage Strengths Rather Than Fix Weaknesses”

“Peter Drucker writes, ‘You cannot build performance on weaknesses. You can build only on strengths. To focus on weakness is not only foolish; it is irresponsible. It is a misuse of a human resource as what a person cannot do is a limitation and nothing else.'”
